Hauraki Rail Trail

The Hauraki Rail Trail(HRT) is Located less than 2 hours from Auckland New Zealand’s largest City

The Hauraki Rail Trail is a short drive from  Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga and is accessible from Kaiaua (10km to Miranda) in the north, Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Waihi/Waikino, and Matamata in the south. The temperate climate in this area provides a great all-year round riding experience.

 

 

Waikato River Trail

Between Cambridge and Taupo

Distance 105km Time 1 Hour to 3 days , Grades 2,3 and 4 (Easy- Advanced)

The Waikato River Trail is made up of five stages, stretching from  a car park north of the settlement of Arapuni down to Atiamuri, near Lake Taupo. The trail can be ridden in either direction. Some stages flow along easy, gravelled paths suitable for all ages, while others are rough mountain bike tracks, complete with tight switchbacks and steep hills.

Rotorua and Taupo Trails

Rotorua Te Ara, Thermal by Bike Distance 47 km Time 1-2 days Grade 2-3 ( Easy-Intermediate)

This trail transport riders through unique geothermal sites, active with geysers and bubbling mud-pools.  Highlights include cultural slows, bush walks and the lure of long soaks in soothing hot pools. Its made up of 2 stages: Stage 1  Rotorua to Waimangu Volconic  Valley 30kms Grade 2(easy) 3.-4 hrs and -Stage 2 Waimangu Volcanic Valley to Waikite Valley Thermal pools  17-21km,2-3 hours (Grade 3)(Intermediate)

Whakarewarewa Forest -MTB

5 km southeast of Rotorua ( rated as one of the Top 10 Mountain Bike Rides in New Zealand by www.rearpatrol.com U.S.A.)

Grades 1-6 , Time 1 hour to 2 days Distance up to 130km.

Track conditions: 70-80% single track, 20-30% forestry roads.

Described as the ‘Disneyland of mountain Biking; Whakarewarewa (aka The Redwoods) contains some of the best purpose-built mountain bike trails in New Zealand. There are lots of facilties at the trail head, and enough trails weaving through the forest to keep you entertained for a weekend. Rotorua has good cafes,shops, bike shops, Maori cultural activities  and thermal pools to relax in after a great ride as well as a huge selection of well priced accommodation. Great Lake Trail-Taupo

Northern Lake  Taupo Distance -15-73km Time 2 hours-2 days Grade 3 ( Intermediate)

With stunning lookouts and beautiful bays for swimming or picknicking, this track is simply the best land-based way to explore the northern half of Lake Taupo. From Taupo township, the adventure begins with a short drive to one of three trailheads. Choosetobike one, two, or all three stages of the Great Lakes Trail depending on how much time you have. All three provide relatively easy mountain biking through an interesting volcanic landscape of native forest, large rock outcrops and welcoming bays on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake.

The Huka Trails-Taupo

(previously called the Upper Waikato River Trails or Eastern Tracks) can be accessed from several places in and around Taupō.  The closest access from town is through Spa Park off Spa Road. The tracks undulate along the banks of the mighty Waikato River with stunning views of the crystal clear water. If you want to see the famous Huka Falls, view the Aratiatia Dam open or access the Craters MTB Park from town,  this is an awesome way to get there.

The Timber Trail

Pureora to Ongarue ( between Te Kuiti and Taupo), Distance 87km Time 2 days  Grades 2-3 ( Easy-Intermediate)

The Timber Trail ushers you through majestic native forest, across the flanks of Mount Purepra, over long suspension bridges and down to the village of Ongarue on historic bush tramlines and more.

Tongariro offers some of the best back-country riding in the North Island or in New Zealand for that matter, with 42 Traverse, Bridge to Nowhere, Tree Trunk Gorge leading the charge.
